Opera Bites Recital - Barnes: “Mad About the Boy!”

Alto soloist in Handel’s “Israel in Egypt”
“Handel warmed up for Messiah with his oratorio Israel in Egypt. The bottom had recently dropped out of the Italian opera market, so Handel turned his hand to composing oratorios in English, which he made every bit as dramatic as opera. In Israel in Egypt, there are rivers of blood, frogs, lice, blotches, blisters, hailstorms, and locusts. There are some achingly beautiful tunes too, and all’s well that ends well.”

Flora
Flora and Chorus in La Traviata for Garsington Opera as an Alvarez Emerging Artist.
Octavian (Cover)
This is the much-anticipated return of Bruno Ravella and Gary McCann’s stylish and opulent 2021 production, which had to be performed to a limited audience after lockdown. Making their Garsington debuts are conductor Finnegan Downie Dear, Matilda Sterby, Andreas Bauer Kanabas and Niamh O’Sullivan, whose Octavian at Théâtre des Champs-Élysées received great acclaim. We are also delighted to welcome back Soraya Mafi as Sophie and Robert Murray as Valzacchi.
Set in Vienna, the story follows the Marschallin, her young lover Octavian, and romantic entanglements involving mistaken identity. Blending farce, romance and poignant wisdom, this cherished opera is a tribute to the beauty and power of the female voice.
Dinah - “Trouble in Tahiti”, Opera Holland Park and Opera Prelude
“Premiered in 1952, Leonard Bernstein’s Trouble in Tahiti is an opera set in a single day. Sam, played here by Jack Holton – Jake Wallace in OHP’s La Fanciulla del West – is a successful but emotionally distant businessman. Dinah, played by Alexandria Moon, is his frustrated wife looking for more. Bright radio-style choruses clash with the lonely lives of Sam and Dinah, revealing a marriage caught between glossy fantasy and emotional truth. Featuring the tour de force aria – What a movie! – for Dinah.”
Romantic Visions - Mendelssohn’s Die Erste Walpurgisnacht
Romantic themes of heroism, idealism, the imagination and dreams inspire tonight’s music. Brahms’ Schicksalslied (Song of Destiny) contrasts the bliss of the gods with the sorrows of the human condition, while Schumann’s Nachtlied evokes the serene world of sleep. Beethoven’s Coriolan Overture portrays the fall of a once supreme hero and Mendelssohn’s Die Erste Walpurgisnacht is a dramatic and haunting musical rendition of the clash between Druidic tradition and Christianity.
